The Art of the Possible

Just saw “Sairat”. It’s been the most depressing since the Syrian chemical attack killing children. Un-comparable event/situation but the movie is a transparent portrayal of honour killing. And because I just “think” about stuff and not “Do” anything about it, I thought let me first gather what are the gravest of all horrendous that disturbs me the most and what ‘could’ be the true solutions to these.
As we take birth, there are two things which we deserve. Love and a healthy childhood. And three evils today which deprive selected individuals of these are – ISIS/Syria crisis, child trafficking and honour killing. At least these are the ones which kill me the most! I can’t believe love and children can trigger hatred or crime!
ISIS/Syria crisis is outside my physical or rational reach. It just pains me and I know nothing about it other than bits and pieces of story that comes in media. And even though Afghanistan, Syria, Iran etc. had always been countries of extreme intrigue, I doubt if I can ever be on those lands to experience the extensive divide between love and crime.
Coming to our own country and its shames.
Honour killing has a single root cause. And I had written earlier about it (http://monalees.blogspot.in/2014/05/go-west.html). So arranged marriage and caste system need to be abolished, however radical or harsh it may sound. Since the government is still struggling on the Triple Talaq issue, this is like a dream few light years away. Even though Tinder is gaining more popularity than matrimonial sites in urban areas; in our villages and towns arranged caste based marriages, dowry and hence female foeticide is so commonplace. Honour killing is a subset of that. Coming to think of it, digital has a lot of potential to improve our Indian society. If there is such a plan of gamification to improve the society? You get brownie points for every good step taken like not doing a caste based marriage- added on your Adhaar card. The trigger points can range from doing a social cause to paying right tax in time to voting etc. These points can be redeemed for things like reducing income tax, getting priority service at government institutes etc. But for this to work, we need a very good database of our population which is beyond biometrics.
And criminal database needs to be stronger. I think all criminals and potential criminals should have GPS devices( and in near future may be neural laces to tap their mind for any criminal activity) implanted in their bodies. The movements can be tracked baselined with expected BAU movements automatically and alerts generated otherwise.
Child trafficking is a reality. I know instances of children homes which are epicentres of such activity. A powerful malicious network exist which involves the controllers and influencers both. At so many traffic signals in Mumbai they are visible begging. But there’s nothing that is done. Of all problems we have in India, this is the easiest to solve with the right governance. But again a strong law and order situation with a great criminal database and digital police networking (mobile/ wearable collaboration) can pull these out of its roots. Am sure if police be empowered with these cool stuff, they will invariably perform and excel.  And it would be much easier to track non performing officials and am hoping would work in demonetised India. Also I think the society need to be more pro-adoption. However better we build our childcare homes, a child still needs a family. I think, child adoption should have the highest brownie points, as much as to nullify tax Or maybe getting auto subsidies on various things if you adopt a child.
A last thing which comes to my mind is a single NGO aggregator should be there which needs to be a government initiative. An interface which drills down to your social interest area/geography where you can contribute easily. As an output you get to see the usage of your contribution. For e.g. If you are interested to educate a child and provide monetary contribution, you get to see various options for contribution (irrespective of the back end NGOs) and your money is channelized accordingly. The NGO using your money has a mandate to provide visible and exclusive output for you.

So much so in the minds. I pray and hope I spring to action soon.

The Big Fat GreekStory

Life has been “Know as you go”. I remember zero facts from my fat books of school and all my wisdom has been from what I have seen during my travel and meeting people. I thought Greece would be just a relaxing vacation by the sea, but it ended up being the greatest history lesson I had. If Notre Dam in Paris can awe us, the Roman Forum gives one goose-bumps then Mycenae (and other archaeological sites) in Greece is a "gasm" of sorts. I probably never be strong enough to visit any of the Ziggurats in Iraq..till the pyramids wait.. and till I comprehend how to figure out IVC remains in my own country , nothing can compare to the depth and realization of the power of mankind, the way Greece has entrenched on me. The history started pouring from Acropolis in Athens. Though it has been from antiquity, its glory gradually developed. The current standing structure of Parthenon was re-built in 500 BC by king Pericles under whose reign democracy, philosophy, science gained ...

Bambino’s trip to Italy

So it has been the bambino’s mom’s childhood wish to go to the land of the good looking fellas. And boy, did she satisfy her wish! They say in Paris a man cannot walk looking straight and in Italy, a woman can’t! Well, seldom I write a travelogue but it was the first time with our 15 month old and it was so much fun I can hardly describe! Rome and Venice was the short and sweet plan. Our Rome apartment was right near the parliament from where mostly all tourist spots were walkable. So the day we landed as our jet lagged son dozed off, we set off with the map to do our touristy stuff. And while we walked, we used Bengali as the language to get around! Oh yes, there are Bangladeshi hawkers all around helping us with the way! Though Paris is considered to be an open museum, Rome is too! A 3000-year-old city still standing strong and beautiful. The beauty of Rome is in its streets which makes you feel the way it must have been millennials ago. Pantheon. Who would say a 2000 year ...
